JOLIET — Westfield Louis Joliet hosted its second annual Westfield Works Wonders 5K Event on Aug. 13. The 5K race, an event which started and finished at the shopping center, raised more than $5,700 for the United Way of Will County.

“This is the second year we have proudly hosted this event in support of the United Way and our community,” said Kate Knuth, general manager of Westfield Louis Joliet. “The generosity of the runners, attendees, volunteers and staff, along with perfect weather, made for a proud day in our shopping center’s history.”

Several key retailers at the shopping center have supported the event from the onset, including Gloria Jean’s, locally owned by Ross Drever.

“We are proud to support the Joliet community, and it was wonderful to see the number of participants and fans increase over last year,” Drever said.

Mark Strand, store manager of JCPenney, appreciated the event’s broad appeal.

“This run/walk offers something for everyone, from the Backpack Boogie for youngsters to a timed, to kid-friendly activities and a competitive run for enthusiasts,” he said.

More than 100 runners participated, and more than 30 kids took part in the Backpack Boogie Fun Run.

The top three winners in the male and female divisions won American Express gift cards. First place received a $150 card; second place received a $75 card and third place received a $50 card.

Major sponsors of the race were Comcast, Star 96.7, JCPenney, Carson Pirie Scott, TGI Friday’s, Gloria Jean’s, Walmart and The American Bagel.
