child leave their home on the way to the Spanish CommunityCenter. The mother, recently
off welfare, has a job that starts at 7:15 AM. Now the mother is able to remain
employed full time while her child is in a quality day care center. The child
also could be enrolled in Hill Memorial Center, Warren-Sharpe Community Center,
or Vilaseca Day Care Center - all United Way of Will County partner agencies
that provide quality day care programs.
9:22 am Staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will &
Grundy Counties meet with a mother and her son from Romeoville who wants to be
matched with a Big Brother. The child, whose father abandoned the family two
years ago, wants a Big Brother who loves baseball and biking. The staff explains
the one-to-one mentoring process and how Big Brothers are carefully screened and
trained before being matched with children. The family leaves encouraged and
hopeful that a suitable match will be found.
10:49 am Retired, alone, and growing older, an elderly
woman arrives at the Senior Services Center of Will County to play cards and
share the company of the many new friends she has made over the past year.
Senior citizens also can find companionship at Eastern Will County Senior
Services.
11:03 am Stepping Stones receives a call from a young
man in Plainfield who has been using drugs for over a year and was kicked out of
his parents' home. The young man, homeless, scared, and wanting to kick his drug
habit, needs the safe and supporting environment offered by Stepping Stones that
will give him a chance to get his life back on track. The South Suburban Council
on Alcoholism & Substance Abuse also offers these services.
1:47 pm The Will County Legal Assistance Program
receives a call from an 87-year-old woman in Elwood. The woman is
wheelchair-bound and suffers from vision and hearing impairments. She is being
denied payment from her HMO for home visits from a nurse who has assisted her
for the past three years on the basis that the care is no longer medically
necessary. Will County Legal Assistance is challenging the HMO's refusal to pay
this expense, but also puts the woman in touch with the Will-Grundy Center for
Independent Living and the Senior Services Center of Will County for their
support and guidance.
2:18 pm A woman calls the United Way of Will County and
explains that she and her family have just moved into the county. She is looking
for clubs/activities for her elementary-aged children. She is given the
telephone numbers and appropriate contacts for the Girl Scouts of Trailways
Council, University of Illinois Extension - 4-H of Will County, Boy Scouts of
America - Rainbow Council, the YMCA of Greater Joliet Area, and the Camp Fire
USA Illinois Prairie Council.
4:49 pm Easter Seals Joliet Region receives a call from
a mother of a three-month-old girl. The child has been diagnosed with cerebral
palsy, and the mother is seeking advice and physical therapy for her daughter.
Easter Seals sets up an appointment to assess the child. As the baby ages, she
will be referred to the United Cerebral Palsy of Will County facility in Joliet.
5:05 pm Trinity Services receives a call from a
distraught mother of a young man who resides in Frankfort. The son is
developmentally disabled and, due to the mother's increasing age and some health
problems, she can't keep her son in the family home any longer. Trinity arranges
to assess and evaluate the young man for placement in one of its residential
homes and adult training programs. Cornerstone Services also provides these
services.
