A Day in the Life of your United Way Dollar
12:07 am A Will County Sheriff's Deputy stops a woman speeding south on Route 53 near Wilmington. She is distraught and has two crying children in her car. After talking with her, the Deputy realizes that she has fled her home because her husband physically abused her that night. After calling Crisis Line's 24-hour Emergency Hot Line, the woman and her children are provided safe shelter and professional intervention by Groundwork.
3:25 am The Joliet Police receive a call that a fight is in progress. When they arrive on the scene, they recognize the teen-aged boy. The police drive the boy home and talk to his parents who don't know where to turn and fear for their son's future. The

police recommend the Boys & Girls Club and explain that it offers a safe shelter from any type of violence. The boy now goes to the Boys & Girls Club every day after school to lift weights and play basketball. He also has the options to go to the Peter Claver Center or The Salvation Army for their after-school programs.

6:40 am
A mother and child leave their home on the way to the Spanish CommunityCenter. The mother, recently off welfare, has a job that starts at 7:15 AM. Now the mother is able to remain employed full time while her child is in a quality day care center. The child also could be enrolled in Hill Memorial Center, Warren-Sharpe Community Center, or Vilaseca Day Care Center - all United Way of Will County partner agencies that provide quality day care programs.

9:22 am Staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will & Grundy Counties meet with a mother and her son from Romeoville who wants to be matched with a Big Brother. The child, whose father abandoned the family two years ago, wants a Big Brother who loves baseball and biking. The staff explains the one-to-one mentoring process and how Big Brothers are carefully screened and trained before being matched with children. The family leaves encouraged and hopeful that a suitable match will be found.

10:49 am Retired, alone, and growing older, an elderly woman arrives at the Senior Services Center of Will County to play cards and share the company of the many new friends she has made over the past year. Senior citizens also can find companionship at Eastern Will County Senior Services.

11:03 am Stepping Stones receives a call from a young man in Plainfield who has been using drugs for over a year and was kicked out of his parents' home. The young man, homeless, scared, and wanting to kick his drug habit, needs the safe and supporting environment offered by Stepping Stones that will give him a chance to get his life back on track. The South Suburban Council on Alcoholism & Substance Abuse also offers these services.

1:47 pm The Will County Legal Assistance Program receives a call from an 87-year-old woman in Elwood. The woman is wheelchair-bound and suffers from vision and hearing impairments. She is being denied payment from her HMO for home visits from a nurse who has assisted her for the past three years on the basis that the care is no longer medically necessary. Will County Legal Assistance is challenging the HMO's refusal to pay this expense, but also puts the woman in touch with the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living and the Senior Services Center of Will County for their support and guidance.

2:18 pm A woman calls the United Way of Will County and explains that she and her family have just moved into the county. She is looking for clubs/activities for her elementary-aged children. She is given the telephone numbers and appropriate contacts for the Girl Scouts of Trailways Council, University of Illinois Extension - 4-H of Will County, Boy Scouts of America - Rainbow Council, the YMCA of Greater Joliet Area, and the Camp Fire USA Illinois Prairie Council.

4:49 pm Easter Seals Joliet Region receives a call from a mother of a three-month-old girl. The child has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and the mother is seeking advice and physical therapy for her daughter. Easter Seals sets up an appointment to assess the child. As the baby ages, she will be referred to the United Cerebral Palsy of Will County facility in Joliet.

5:05 pm Trinity Services receives a call from a distraught mother of a young man who resides in Frankfort. The son is developmentally disabled and, due to the mother's increasing age and some health problems, she can't keep her son in the family home any longer. Trinity arranges to assess and evaluate the young man for placement in one of its residential homes and adult training programs. Cornerstone Services also provides these services.
