Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will & Grundy Counties

Big Brothers Big Sisters matched Big Brother Omar with Little Brother Walter since January of 2008.  Omar and Walter share a wide variety of interests and enjoy doing all kinds of activities together. Omar has exposed Walter to things he would have never been able to do such as sporting events, water parks, shows, etc. Beyond taking him to events and activities, Omar has shown Walter how to be positive, how to strive to be the best he can be, and has been an inspiration to him and his whole family.

Walter and Omar have only been together for about a year and a half but the bond they have made is everlasting. Omar has shown Walter how important it is to be a positive role model and we have influenced each other tremendously through this experience. Although he is already very intelligent and inquisitive, he was made tremendous improvements in school and with his self-confidence. Omar can see him wanting to improve more & more while staying away from negativity that surrounds him.

Walter’s mother enrolled him in the program after he took the families divorce very hard. He had become very shy and started to fall behind at school now he calls Walter regularly and they are always doing things together. Since they have been matched together, Walter has blossomed out of his shell and has improved tremendously in school. Omar has helped motivate Walter to try harder in all that he does.

Without the support form United Way Omar and Walter may never have met. The funds United Way provides support vital programs that allow “at risk” youth like Walter to have successful mentoring experience contributing to brighter futures, better schools and stronger communities for all.
